New Zealand’s Answer to Munich
Legend has it that every September, there’s a little-known beer festival in a small town down under, in the United States of Europe.
They call this festival “Oktoberfest” – we figure this must be the locals’ idea of humour. But the spirit of the festival is something we can all relate to; a celebration of beer and the things that go with it – camaraderie, music, food and fun. Sounds like a good time, doesn’t it? But here’s the rub – it looks like a pretty long drive, and there aren’t any buses going there from Britomart – I checked¹.
We at the Hopful Thinkers are all about solving problems, but despite several beers, this one was proving a bit of a head-scratcher.
An Underwater bus was mooted, but it seemed a bit “Captain Nemo” for our taste, and with far too much chance of arriving with wet trousers.
Then someone said – why don’t we just bring Oktoberfest here to Auckland? On reflection, our chances of kidnapping an Oompah band and a dozen Beer Frau seemed iffy at best, even with an underwater bus. We would need to do something with more of a local flavour. An Aucktoberfest.
Picture this — tucked away from the chilly September weather in the Cloud, two thousand revellers sit at massive wooden tables, drinking awesome local beers, snacking on pretzels and other delicious treats, and generally having a good time. There’s live entertainment, beer master classes, a VIP area, over fifty different beers on tap… sounds great right? We think so too.
These past couple of months, we have been busy behind the scenes, transforming this idea into something resembling a beer festival. So pop your email address in that little box to the right and click “Subscribe”, because there will be a lot more info coming your way as things ramp up for what will be an awesome experience, without the long drive, wet trousers, endless oompah music², drunk Australians³ and pricey accommodation.
By the way – if you’re interested in bringing brews, food, or sponsorship to the table, please get in touch by emailing [email protected]. We would love to hear from you!
Prost!
¹ Don’t believe me? Check for yourself!
² There might be a little bit of oompah music. It just seems appropriate.
³ Just kidding, some of my favourite drunks are Australians!
