I thought I was done blogging for tonight… until I got a whiff of this baby and just about had a beergasm.
Imagine my delight when I open the fridge, seeking the “surprise” that my wife had promised me after a hard day’s slog. There in the door was a bright red label, standing out amongst the dullness of assorted condiments and half-empty milk bottles.
In case you don’t live in New Zealand, Flying Nun Records is one of the most influential Punk-Rock record labels in the country. Starting out in 1981 in Christchurch, it was the decision to start giving Dunedin bands an outlet that launched the label into history. Recently bought back from Warner Music by the founder and a few good mates (one of whom happens to be a top NZ muso), Flying Nun is back, working through their back-catalogue and seeking out fresh talent in our shaky isles.
Enough about the label, this one’s more about what’s on the inside of the bottle…
It’s been a while since we did any reviews; however tonight we have a selection of beers from Renaissance Brewing Company of Malborough, and it’s high time we wrote them up.
Renaissance are the producers of one of our all time favourites, the Craftsman Chocolate Oatmeal Stout. But first up we have the Perfection Pale Ale.
Format: 750 ml Bottle (with a nifty staple over cork) Type: Speciality Flanders Beer Origin: France (Flanders Hops) Strength: 8.5% ABV Cost: $16.90 Purchased from: New World Victoria Park, Auckland Selected by: Chris
This beer built high expectations before we even opened it. Having to slide off the grunty staple before taking at it with a corkscrew (not just any corkscrew – there are even direct instructions on how NOT to open it on the back of the bottle in true French style)! We figured it had to be good as it was such a bloody mission to open the bloody thing.
